Andy Kokics had worked at the Oasis food bank for many years until his health deteriorated. He had no family and I anticipated a very small turnout for his memorial service. I was wrong. There were about 50 people from his building, his church and Oasis. Phyllis Ortiz, the founder of Oasis, gave a moving eulogy of how Andy humbling and lovingly touched the lives of everyone around him. Others spoke of his kind smile and encouraging words. Don Dearlove, who worked with Andy at Oasis, said that Andy epitomized the character of Jimmy Stewart in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”. While perhaps not successful in the way that is measured in this world, the world is a much better place because Andy was among us. His life inspires me, and many others, to do the same. I guess that is what “community” feels like.
