Last Tuesday our picnic in the park was like, well, a picnic in the park. The weather was perfect. Community members sat down in small circles eating and talking. The mood was entirely relaxed. Which is a real contrast to our usual dinners in the Oasis basement, that is always so loud with voices echoing off the walls. Just for the fun of it, we did the emergency exit speech (“If there is a fire, leave any direction you want”). People also hung around longer than they normally do. And there were no dishes to wash. It is amazing how much difference the location of an event can make. What is it about human nature and group dynamics that prevents us from being just as relaxed on a regular Tuesday?
