In the last few weeks we have been delighted to have Dee doing a school placement with us at Oasis. This week I met with her and her supervisor to review the tasks she is doing. Dee is very agreeable and has been happy to do anything that needs doing. She does everything with enthusiasm. She is helping us expand our capacity to refer community members to local agencies and to arrangement educational sessions. But sitting there in the meeting, thinking of the skills that would help her, I realized that I was holding onto a key opportunity for her. On Wednesdays, when I am not needed to set things up for the food bank, I go out and hang around with the people waiting in line. We chat about anything and everything. But I also learn about some of the situations our community members are dealing with and can alert the intake staff about needed referrals. I also learn about their thoughts on how Oasis can be more effective. It would be great for Dee to do this. She would develop a keen insight into the real Oasis. Bring your coat next week Dee!
