I have done a lot of presentations on behalf of Oasis. This week I preached my first full sermon as its representative. People do want to hear the stories of “mission work”, but this was a rare opportunity to also communicate how “good works” might fit in with the listener’s life. Many people are incredibly busy these days and any message that says “add one more thing to your to do list” may actually be counterproductive. So the message was on how to be a well-rounded Christian. Instead of asking people to focus more on community service, the message was about how to balance a Christian life so that it includes theological study, personal spirituality, fellowship and compassion activities. And to the extent that one trait is dominant, to at least respect and support believers who emphasize another area. Having said all that, I was still pleased when two people came up to me afterwards asking how they could volunteer at Oasis.
