I witnessed a strong argument for the existence of God last night. For our big turkey dinner we had, for the first time ever, a team of six firefighters from the local fire hall helping cook and serve the meal. They were wonderful: cheery, hardworking, generous with their time. Mid meal a woman stood up in distress. She could not breathe. People around her did not know what to do. Two of the firefighters saw the situation and went over to her and performed the Heimlich Manoeuver. One squeeze and out popped a chunk of bone and meat; she was breathing again. The firefighters returned to the serving table to resume their duties as if nothing had happened. Our community member was in a state of shock that took a long time to wear off. Later she went into the kitchen and said: “Thank you for saving my life.” I realize that we can question God’s presence when bad things happen to us. But only God could have arranged for the firefighters to visit the one week in four years that we had this type of emergency.
