Like most people, during that brief lull at the beginning of each year I try to set some priorities for the coming year. This year doing so is particularly important as the Board of Oasis is setting aside most of a Saturday to do some serious strategic planning. There is a lot of inspiration available. A community member sent me an article about an individual who rescued 200 Syrian refugees. I called up another community member who is doing all he can to turn his life around to avoid prison because of criminal charges arising from his past life.
However, some of my reflections were sobering. The sudden death of a favourite movie star who was close to my age and the even more sudden death of one of my boyhood friends, also helped focus my mind. I was reminded of a recent, excellent article in the media about how most people talk about their families on their death beds: http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/20/health/what-people-talk-about-before-dying-kerry-egan/index.html. For many of our community members, conversations about family are full of pain and hurt. But if it is important to them, it might be more worthwhile to talk about their families, when they are ready, than the latest sports event (even with the Super Bowl on the horizon). Now there is a priority!
