When one of our key staff people fell ill, our volunteers leapt into action. They knew everything that had to be done and were even giving guidance to other staff on the finer points of storing the food unloaded from the trucks. They were fearless in preparing an innovative meal for the community dinner for about 50 people. I monitored the situation closely from work to see if I would have to come down to help out but the consistent message I received was “we don’t need you”. Some of our volunteers even set aside work opportunities and health care appointments so that they could come early the next day to set up for the food bank. And they worked hard throughout the morning of the food bank when we had a larger than usual attendance. The mood throughout the two days was cheerful and enthusiastic. Yep, our volunteers are keepers all right.
