Volunteering is rewarding. But for Peter Graves, it was more rewarding than usual. Peter, a fire fighter from the station just doors up the street from Oasis, had been recruited along with five of his colleagues to help prepare and serve our Christmas turkey dinner. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to administer the Heimlich manoeuvre on one of our community members who choked on her meal, saving her life. I had a front row seat and I can attest as to how dire the situation was before Peter stepped in.
Two of us from Oasis had the privilege of attending the awards luncheon where the Toronto Fire Fighters Association recognized Peter for his calm, quick heroism. Peter assured us that the station was looking forward to attending the Christmas dinner this year again. He also made a generous donation from his award to Oasis. Thank you Peter!
All of our volunteers are heroes deserving of special recognition.
