I was furious. A community member, who was a follower of Jesus, said an incredibly insensitive thing in front of another person. In fact it was hurtful. I apologized to the other person and then I spoke to the community member. My anger was not well concealed. I reminded the community member that even if he viewed the other person as his enemy, Jesus told us to love our enemies. The community member reacted to my anger. As the expression goes, we had words. I restored my relationship with the community member over the subsequent weeks. For some reason he stilled enjoyed telling me about his beliefs, which clearly has a number of differences from my own. However recently, in a serious moment, the community member told me that what I said after the incident had stayed with him. The community member was actively reflecting on Jesus’ teaching. While I still cannot see why the community member saw the other person as an enemy, I was touched by his comment. He, like me, was trying to grow.
