Miscommunication

No thank you. That was the response from a community member when I put a box with numbers in front of her. (We now use a lottery system for people using our food bank so that they do not wait in line for hours in the cold and wet to be first through the line.) I asked her to take a number. She hesitated briefly, looked in the box and took a number. Later she came up to me to explain her hesitation. She thought I was asking for a donation and she had not brought any money with her. I was stunned. We would never ask a community member to pay for using our food bank. Why would she even think that? Then it struck me. We operate from the basement of a church. In the past churches sometimes used peer pressure to encourage donations. Jesus had some pretty specific comments about that practice. It is a shame that people assume that Oasis would ever do that.
