We had a couple of senior representatives from Christians Against Poverty (CAP) share with us their work to provide no-cost debt counselling to low-income people. It is a fascinating concept involving in-home visits with people facing extreme financial pressures (often with multiple calls by creditors each day). We had invited Major Doug Hammond from the local Salvation Army citadel to join us. He peppered the representative of CAP with questions and shared how he felt this program could have a positive impact in the community. One of our long term volunteers who knows the community well also seemed enthusiastic saying “this would work”. I must confess I got pretty involved in the discussion. Regardless of what happens with the CAP initiative in our area, it was great to see older people (sorry Doug and George) get excited.
