Erika Abele shared with the staff a document she had worked on as a very young person. She was helping her mother prepare a Proposal to create a community centre to help vulnerable people, especially new Canadians, and especially women and children. As we looked at the original Goal and Purposes in the mind of our founder, Phyllis Ortiz, we were amazed at how relevant they still were to what we are doing today, a quarter of a century later. And the name for the community centre: “Oasis”. I am sure that a young person typing up this document for her mother had no idea of what the Proposal would mean in her own life. Or in the life of so many others. Including me.
