“I have lived in a shelter before”. The statement was made with such calmness that I was taken aback. Three months ago this community member had told me that he was being evicted so that renovations could be made to his rooming house. He had been actively searching for a new place, without success. His is not a unique story in our slowly gentrifying neighbourhood. Many community members are finding it very difficult to find a place to live here. I know that if I had been looking for a place to live and I had ten days to go before living on the street, I would have been in panic mode. I would be under severe stress and suffering extreme insomnia. But not this community member. He told me that he tries not to worry about things that he cannot change. He was living the kind of life of Beatitudinal faith I could only dream of. His resilience is a model for me.
