(Another) one of my favourite parts of volunteering at Oasis is hearing community members tell their stories. Recently a community member shared with me that when she was a child she was so poor her only toys were empty tin cans that they found lying around. One day she and her friends found a discarded tire and were thrilled with their new toy, which they played with for months. While her life has never been easy, she feels much more economically secure now, even though she still uses a food bank from time to time. I was reminded of my childhood. My parents were new Canadians and we started off with very little. But we were never in need and I always had store bought toys. I did not realize it then, but it was the beginning of my life of privilege.
