The main reason we hire summer students at Oasis is to try to impact their lives. Sure it is great to have the additional help at a time when many volunteers are away. And having young energy livens up the place. However, these young people are making key decisions about their lives. They are choosing careers. They will soon be thinking about what kinds of employers they wish to work for. And their lifelong volunteer habits are now being formed. Last week we set aside an hour for one of our “elders”, who has been volunteering at Oasis for some time, and her husband to share their life stories. They talked about establishing educational institutions on a non-existent budget. They described helping street kids in Brasil, children residing with their mothers in jail in Bolivia and desperate refugees in Turkey. Afterwards many of our students, young volunteers and visiting interns acknowledged how the presentation had made them think about their lives in a new way. Thank you Cathie and David.
