We were pleased to have Maimoonah and a group of day camp students from the Dawah Centre (a local Islamic information storefront) visit Oasis. They were enthusiastic volunteers serving on one of our busiest days this summer. The day camp students listened intently as a public health nurse, Annie, who was providing smoking cessation resources to our community, talked about her work. The students also received some oral health instruction from Michelle, a dental assistant who was offering screening services. Our own summer students provided an overview of the services that Oasis offers. We also had a chance to ask the day camp students about the services offered at the Dawah Centre and obtained some free advice on socially appropriate ways of interacting with Muslim people. Just before they joined us for lunch, one of the students, Israt, gave us a generous financial contribution towards the work of Oasis. The students had raised the funds themselves. The gift was unexpected and greatly appreciated.
