“You are the Pastor, right?” she asked. I replied that I was just a volunteer at the Food Bank. She told me that she thought I was the Pastor because I stood around and talked with people. In fact, she told me, I feel more comfortable talking with you than I do with my own counsellor who is always checking the clock.
I did not realize how valuable a listening ear at the right time can be to some people. That is a gift that we can give at the Food Bank even when supplies are tight. I also felt guilty because it is a gift I rarely offer. I have a reputation at work of being task-orientated and even a bit anti-social. And when I get home from a social setting I am exhausted and don’t have a lot of listening left for my family. I feel sorry for real Pastors.
