I had no idea that you could not turn left onto Oasis’ street during rush hour. I had never noticed the sign. But there I was, sitting in front of the early line-up to the Food Bank getting a ticket. The officer actually said “You have been charged with an offence” when he handed it to me. As I related my story to various community members I realized that many of them have had much more serious interactions with the law. In fact, some of them have court dates coming up where they could end up in jail. My situation seemed trivial compared to theirs. I am sure some (but not all of them) had been charged without realizing that they were doing anything wrong. Some community members shared their experiences with me. But to a person they all sympathized with me and were concerned whether I was alright. They appreciate how upsetting it can be to end up on the “wrong side of the law”. I don’t think I am going to snicker smugly next time I see someone pulled over by the police.
