$626 a month. That is was a single person receives under Ontario Works (sometimes called welfare or social assistance). The speaker from the local legal aid clinic, which also provides housing assistance, went on to say that the typical one bedroom apartment goes for $950 per month. The average rooming house room is $500-600 per month. No wonder so many people on social assistance use food banks. Coming to the food bank and community meals is the only way that our community members can both eat and keep their rooms.
Ontario Disability Support Program is a little better, paying a basic rate of just over $1000. But there is a lot of paperwork required to enter the program. And apparently most applications are denied initially and entry is largely gained only after making an appeal to a tribunal. We had a group of volunteers from Germany attending. They could not understand what was being said. I am hoping that the only reason for the confusion was language.
