The staff at Oasis occasionally gather to pray. It is completely voluntary. And it is led by staff, not management. It is almost always very special. At the last meeting one of the staff said, in her prayer, “please accept our service”. I was struck by those words. Aren’t we doing a good thing? Shouldn’t God be thanking us for our service? Why would God possibly not accept our service? As I thought about it I realized that she was right. God does not need our help. Serving God is not only a privilege, it is a blessing to us. And “good works” can certainly be done in the wrong way or for the wrong reasons. God’s acceptance of our service is not earned; it is a gift that we are fortunate to receive. And such acceptance is way better than winning a lottery.
