One of the great things about parables is their paradoxical nature. Last week we looked at the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Our discussion leader’s main point is that we often fool ourselves when interpreting life’s experiences and therefore we need to base our understanding of events on scripture. Even if someone came back from the dead most people would not believe in the afterlife. A community member then commented that if we look carefully we can see God working wonderfully in our everyday experiences. Just like St. Ignatius Loyola’s “daily examen” spiritual discipline, we can see God a work in our lives. Paradoxically, I think both people are correct.
