I have read and studied the parable of the tenants in Luke 20 many times. When discussing it recently at our Oasis small group Bible study I was taken by the words “God forbid”. This is what the original hearers of the parable said when Jesus asked whether the evil tenants should be punished for their violence and greed. That response never made sense to me as punishment seemed to be the only just result. Through discussion with the others in the group I heard that perhaps the original audience realized that the parable was about Israel no longer being God’s chosen people. Their sense of entitlement to that position had developed to the point where they could not see how God could ever take it away from them. Which begs the question, what do we feel entitled to have?
