This summer we have five idealistic, enthusiastic and hardworking summer students with us at Oasis. They have already gone through an intensive training program on the values and policies of Oasis. There was a good discussion about the “first do no harm” concept as we discussed the ways in which we can do more damage than good in our programs or when interacting with community members (e.g., foster dependency, hurtful comments). Just before their first food bank we had a few minutes to catch our collective breath after setting up. I asked the question: What do we provide at our Food Bank other than food? The responses were inspiring. Words like “conversation”, “friendship”, “a warm welcome”, “relationship” and “love” came out. Then we did our very best (albeit with some slip ups) to deliver all of the above.
