Meet Our Oasis Summer Staff
A big welcome to our 2023 Summer Staff, Hazel, Sadie, Kalynna, and Hannah.
It’s July, which means it’s time to welcome our new summer staff to Oasis! We’re over the moon to have Hannah, Hazel, Kalynna and Sadie on board at the centre this year. We’re fortunate to be able to have these positions with help through the Canada Summer Jobs program supported by the Federal Government, and we’re so grateful to have an amazing crew to help us this July and August at Oasis.
For Hazel, Sadie, and Kalynna, the summer job program is a return to Oasis. Hazel first worked here in 2021, and Sadie interned here through George Brown College’s Social Work Program. Kalynna also has been regular. An active volunteer at Oasis on Wednesdays, she’s enjoying getting the full picture of how the centre operates the rest of the week.“It’s been all positive,” she says. “And I enjoy knowing that I’m giving back to the community.”
While Hannah is new to the centre, she is already an integral part of the group. She was drawn to Oasis and applied out of a desire to be more social at work. “I wanted a job that was going to be working with people so I could grow my personal skills.” she explains. “It’s a great team."
“It’s a great community here,” Hazel agrees. I also really like seeing the behind-the-scenes of how everything happens here, from bagging the bags to unloading the trucks, to giving out the food on Wednesdays. And giving back is a really nice feeling.”
One benefit from helping out with some of the more physical demands of Oasis, like lifting boxes and unloading the trucks? Improving that muscle mass! Hannah’s new goal this summer is to get really buff from lifting all the boxes. Better than any gym!
In early July, they hit the ground running by planning our LivingRoom Ontario Trillium Fund Celebration. Now, they’re helping with the daily tasks around Oasis, like helping plan our August Barbecue, and updating our on-boarding documents for summer students and interns.
“I’m really just excited to support Harry and Amy, because I know they have so much on their plate at all times. And I know they’re balancing 100 million things in the background as well as serving over 500 families a week,” says Sadie.
And we’re so excited to have each of our summer staff here at Oasis and look forward to working with them over the next two months! Welcome to the team!
